Our Philosophy

Our Vision

To embody the literal meaning of kindergarten—a ‘children’s garden’—where children can rest in the care of calm, confident, and playful teachers, nurtured to grow and flourish in their own way and at their own pace.

Our Values

Connection
Relationships enrich the soil from which everything grows.

Exploration
Children are given the space and light to explore and discover in their own way.

Playfulness
Joy and movement bring energy and life to our garden.

The Weaving – Te Whāriki

Our philosophy is guided by Te Whāriki, the early childhood curriculum. The following four principles of Te Whāriki provide the foundation through which we weave our philosophy, reflecting our community, values, and aspirations for our tamariki.

Empowerment | Whakamana

We empower tamariki (children) to take responsible risks and discover their own capabilities through real-life experiences, within an environment of care and reasonable boundaries. The rhythm of our day creates predictability, providing a secure base from which children can explore.

We trust in each child’s inner drive to learn, stepping back as they wrestle with new challenges while staying close by to offer support and reassurance. We empower children to be kaitiaki (guardians), with an understanding that they are an integral part of a shared garden that we tend together.

Holistic Development | Kotahitanga

We deliver a holistic programme that nurtures the vital hum of our tamariki, supporting growth of mind (hinengaro), body (tinana), and spirit (wairua). We recognise the link between movement and brain development, providing a challenging yet safe environment for physical exploration.

Our programme balances child-led play with intentional teacher-led learning. We cultivate curiosity and wonder through storytelling, music, art, and time in nature, nurturing creativity and a strong sense of self. We support children to develop emotional literacy, helping them to recognise, understand, and express their feelings.

Family and Community | Whānau Tangata

We are committed to fostering strong connections between tamariki, whānau (families), and kaiako (teachers), creating strong roots that enrich the soil of our learning community. Through shared rituals such as eating together, collective experiences, and celebrating our diverse cultures, we nurture a sense of kotahitanga (togetherness).

We extend our garden beyond the kindergarten by venturing to local parks, forests, and community spaces, strengthening children’s sense of place. As partners in Te Tiriti o Waitangi, we honour our bicultural foundations by threading te reo Māori (Māori language) and tikanga Māori (customs and practices) into our daily rhythm. We welcome whānau to share their knowledge and skills to help nurture the growth of every child.

Relationships | Ngā Hononga

Our philosophy is rooted in the attachment-based approach of developmental psychologist Gordon Neufeld. Secure, authentic relationships provide the ideal conditions for learning. Our small group size and consistent staffing allow trust to take root and deepen over time, giving children the confidence to explore, learn, and grow.

Through gardening, forest excursions, and hands-on experiences in nature, we cultivate a deep connection with Papatūānuku (the land, Mother Earth), fostering a sense of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) for the natural world.
